Arctic Ice In A Hurry

with 3 comments

A new study “Arctic Sea Ice Decline: Faster Than Forecast?” reports that Arctic sea ice is melting at a significantly faster rate than projected by any of the 18 computer models used by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in preparing its 2007 assessments. The research was carried out by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Colorado’s National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC).

“While the ice is disappearing faster than the computer models indicate, both observations and the models point in the same direction: the Arctic is losing ice at an increasingly rapid pace and the impact of greenhouse gases is growing,” said NCAR scientist Marika Holland, one of the study’s co-authors.

  1. Which, of course, demonstrates why one shouldn’t put their faith in computer games to predict the future.

  3. Hi Pete,

Sorry, this is such a friendly site I forget myself. I jokingly call computer models, computer games, since that’s basically what the are. People tend to put too much faith in them, so I like to add a little bad PR when the opportunity is there.
