It’s The Environment, Stupid

with 3 comments

He still doesn’t get it. President Bush’s State of The Union address used the word ‘environment’ just three times. The phrase ‘climate change’ cropped up just once. The much-publicised drive to reduce gas consumption by 20% over the next 10 years is intended to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil, not oil, period. So, while increasing the supply of alternative fuels to 35 billion gallons by 2017, and extending fuel efficiency standards to all cars, Bush advocates the stepping up of domestic oil production “in environmentally sensitive ways”. Fat chance.

For me, this is the most telling paragraph:

“America is on the verge of technological breakthroughs that will enable us to live our lives less dependent on oil. These technologies will help us become better stewards of the environment — and they will help us to confront the serious challenge of global climate change.”

Still convinced that technological solutions can be found to every problem. Still convinced that Americans can continue to live their lives without inconvenience or adjustment. Still dismissive of the dire consequences of American profligate consumption. Still President for the next two years.

  1. Yes, that old technological fix chestnut. He’s only pretending to pre-empt the Democrats no less than four Climate Bills up for horse trading in the backrooms of Congress. He may even have an eye on his poor standing in the polls. The worst in 50 years of Presidents. Oh, except that is with Nixon … just before he resigned. 🙂

  2. Scary!

Bush is wrong on so many levels it’s hard to know where to begin. He still believes Iraq has been a huge success.

Yes, most of that 20% cut in oil consumption that he promised is going to be achieved by switching from gas to ethanol which will benefit his huge corporate agricultural buddies.

And in spite of the fact that there is a growing global consensus regarding CO2 emissions, he’s still unbudging in his adamant stance against reducing the US ouput.

    The man’s a moron.

  3. He’s worse than that, he’s a cheque book! He’s a puppet for his Dad and his business-political mates who simply love the ultimate heady mix of power & money that those connections bring. Iraq was all about a firestorm of billions of US tax payers money being transferred under the guise of helping Iraq, going straight into certain US corporate coffers. That has all gone now. There’s no more ‘development’ money for Iraq & apparently little to show for it. The Bush dynasty & pals never really intended to sort Iraq. Blair was sold an illusion. The march of 2 million UK citizens in London (of which I was one) back in Feb 2003 did try to impress this upon Blair but, we are not able to blind him with power as Bush did.
